That is 213 days from the shooting to the first day of jury selection, by our count, with two trial dates already come and gone.

When does the Caleb Flynn trial start?

Thursday, Sept. 17, with jury selection at 8:45 a.m. ET. Pratt has set aside two weeks but told both sides the trial runs as long as it needs to.

Picking jurors won't happen in the usual room. The court is using the historic Miami County Courthouse, home to the municipal court, because far more prospective jurors than normal have been summoned. Once a panel is seated, openings and testimony move to the county's Safety Building in downtown Troy.

What is Caleb Flynn charged with?

The top count is aggravated murder. He also faces felonious assault, evidence tampering and two misdemeanor counts of intimidating an attorney, victim or witness. He remains in the Miami County Jail on $3.5 million bail.

Prosecutors allege he shot his wife and then tried to make the house look like a burglary scene. His defense team has not conceded any of it. Until a jury rules, every one of those allegations is just that.

Who was Ashley Flynn?

She was a teacher and volleyball coach in the Tipp City school district, and the mother of two daughters.

Those girls are now expected to be witnesses at their father's trial, which is where some of the hardest pretrial fights have landed.

Why won't the trial be moved out of Miami County?

The defense argued the county had been saturated by six months of news, social media and televised court clips. On Aug. 25, Pratt called the motion "not well-taken at this time."

The key words are "without prejudice." If jury questioning shows a fair panel can't be found locally, the defense can ask again. The same goes for the state's request to sequester jurors, which Pratt turned down because she found repeated warnings to avoid coverage were enough, for now.

👉 If jury selection drags well past the first few days, watch for the venue fight to come back.

Will the Flynn children have to testify in front of their father?

Yes, as things stand. In April, prosecutors asked for a screen so the two girls wouldn't have to see the defendant or the gallery. The defense objected under the Confrontation Clause, and on July 7 Pratt sided with the defense.

Her order said the state hadn't shown specific evidence that testifying in his presence would traumatize the children or keep them from communicating. That is a high bar in any courtroom, and a painful one here.

What is being decided at the Sept. 14 hearing?

Three motions filed last week, all about who sits where and who gets filmed:

Her father can attend throughout regardless, as the designated victim representative. The defense wants the rest of the family kept out until each has testified, and it opposed the recording limit for adults. According to the Dayton Daily News, it did not object to barring recordings of the minor witnesses. We'll add Pratt's rulings here once they're filed.

Where does the American Idol connection come in?

Only as background. Flynn, now 40 and a former worship pastor, was a contestant on season 12 in 2013. It's the reason the case drew national outlets like Court TV, but nothing about the show is at issue in the courtroom.

How does this compare with other spouse cases we're tracking?

Utah's Kouri Richins case shows how much can still happen after a verdict, from a restitution order to a separate fraud trial set for Oct. 9. The Lindsay Clancy trial is a reminder that a jury can deadlock after weeks of testimony. And in Jacksonville, the Jared Bridegan murder case has one defendant awaiting sentencing while the other's trial is set for 2027.

FAQ

Is the Caleb Flynn trial televised? Court TV has covered the pretrial hearings, and the Dayton Daily News says it will have a reporter in court every day. Whether cameras are allowed for specific witnesses is part of what Pratt is deciding this week.

Could the trial still move? Possibly. Pratt's order says the court may revisit a change of venue if questioning shows an impartial jury can't be seated in Miami County. For now it stays in Troy, and he is presumed innocent.

Has Dateline or 20/20 covered the case? Not in a new episode so far. Both shows are between seasons until Sept. 25; our weekly true crime TV grid tracks what airs, and the viewing guide covers streaming.

More court dates are coming up fast: the Delphi appeal is argued Sept. 21. Everything else we follow is in Case Updates.
