Claire Gravel Case Update (Sept. 2026): John Carey Serving Life Without Parole

Short version: The Claire Gravel case is closed in the trial court. John Carey, 66, was found guilty of first-degree murder on March 3, 2026, and sentenced on April 9 to life without parole, the automatic term in Massachusetts. His lawyer said an appeal would follow. 20/20 told the story in its season 49 premiere, "The Salem Strangler," on Friday, Sept. 25, 9–11 p.m. ET on ABC.

That's roughly 39 years and nine months from the killing to the sentence. Her sister put the wait almost to the day in court.

Who was Claire Gravel?

She was 20, from North Andover, and studying political science at what was then Salem State College. The Essex County district attorney's office notes she also worked at the National Braille Press.

In late June 1986 she didn't come home. She was found strangled along a stretch of Route 128 in Beverly, a few miles from Salem. There were leads, and a piece of physical evidence that would matter decades later, but no arrest.

How did a 2007 attack crack a 1986 murder?

In 2007 Rosemary Diskin was attacked inside her home in Hamilton, a town next to Beverly. She survived, and her young son helped stop the attacker. The man was John Carey, and he was convicted of attempted murder and sent to prison for 20 years.

Because of that conviction, Carey's DNA went into the state and national databases. The shirt used in Gravel's killing had already been tested, and the profile from it eventually matched him. ABC News says Carey had attended Salem State himself in the late 1970s.

👉 No genetic genealogy, no confession. This was solved the old-fashioned modern way: a later conviction put a killer's DNA on file.

Timeline of the Claire Gravel case from 1986 to 2026
Six dates across 40 years, from Route 128 to the 20/20 premiere.

What happened at John Carey's trial?

The trial was held in Essex County Superior Court. Prosecutors Kim Faitella and Jessica Strasnick leaned on the DNA from the tank top.

Defense lawyer Mark Booker told jurors the 1986 investigation was incomplete. He pointed to missing records and witness accounts that had shifted over four decades, and asked for a not-guilty verdict.

The jury didn't accept it. On March 3 it returned a first-degree murder verdict, and sentencing, first set for late March, took place April 9.

Where is John Carey now?

In state prison, serving life without the possibility of parole. Before this case he was already serving time at MCI-Concord on the Hamilton conviction; he was listed as a Braintree man at sentencing.

His lawyer said at sentencing that an appeal would be filed, and ABC News reported in September that he is appealing. In Massachusetts, a first-degree murder conviction goes straight to the Supreme Judicial Court. We had not found an argument date as of Wednesday, Oct. 7.

At the sentencing hearing, Gravel's brother told the court she would be smiling that day.

What is 20/20's "The Salem Strangler" about?

It's two hours, not one. Deborah Roberts reports, and ABC says the episode includes Gravel's family, the survivor of the 2007 attack and the investigators who finally closed the file.

That line-up matters. Diskin speaking on camera is the piece most viewers won't have heard before, since the trial coverage centered on the DNA.
