A Prince William County judge said no to one more delay in September, and that settled it. Two years and two months after a nurse walked out of a Manassas hospital and vanished, her husband's murder trial has a firm start date.

Who is on trial, and for what?

Naresh Bhatt, of Manassas Park, faces first-degree murder, concealing a dead body and physically defiling a dead body. He has pleaded not guilty.

The charges came in two waves. Police arrested him in August 2024 on the concealment count; a grand jury added murder and defilement on Dec. 2, 2024, after DNA testing on blood found inside the couple's home.

What happened to Mamta Kafle Bhatt?

She was 28, a nurse at UVA Health Prince William Medical Center and the mother of an infant daughter. Nobody outside her home has seen her since late July 2024.

Her body has never been found. Her family, some of them flying in from Nepal, has sat through hearing after hearing without that.

Why has it taken two years?

Evidence volume, mostly. The defense has described more than 4,000 discovery items and roughly 1.5 terabytes of digital material — video, recordings, photographs, police files.

An earlier motion argued the material was handed over through a limited-access online system rather than on a drive, which made reviewing it with a jailed client close to impossible. That argument won a continuance once, in July 2025, pushing the trial from September 2025 to this fall.

It did not win a second one. Chief Public Defender Tracey Lenox asked again in September; Senior Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Sarah Sami countered that another year would leave the family, and the evidence, in limbo. Judge Kimberly Irving said she could not in good conscience grant a continuance, pointing to the risk of losing witnesses and evidence over time.

👉 The ruling held: jury selection began on Monday, Oct. 5, after Bhatt was arraigned and pleaded not guilty to all three charges. Judge Irving turned down a fresh defense request for a delay that morning, per Potomac Local. The jury was seated on the third day, Wednesday, Oct. 7, and Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney Matthew Sweet gave the prosecution's opening statement that afternoon; the defense told jurors the evidence leaves a gap the Commonwealth can't fill, ABC7 and NBC4 Washington reported. The first witnesses testified the same day. On Thursday, Oct. 8, the fourth day of the trial, her mother, Gita Kafle, took the stand, followed by a close friend, a former co-worker and police who handled the missing-person report, WTOP and ABC7 reported. That closed the first week. On Tuesday, Oct. 13, the fifth day, jurors finished watching the recorded interview Det. Claudia Ventura conducted with Bhatt, and the prosecution called a hospital security official, a nurse colleague of Mamta’s and friends from Nepal, WTOP and ABC7 reported. WJLA reported that on Wednesday, Oct. 14 (day six of the trial) jurors heard from a Manassas Park police case agent, phone-records custodians from AT&T and T-Mobile, a Nepalese journalist who interviewed Bhatt on Facebook Live in 2024, and a former Prince William County crime scene investigator. As of Friday, Oct. 30, we have not found a report of a verdict.

What evidence are prosecutors expected to use?

Three strands have surfaced in filings so far.

None of that is a body, which is the whole problem the Commonwealth has to solve in front of twelve people.

Can a jury convict without a body?

Yes, and juries have been doing it more often. Two of the cases we have tracked this fall are the proof.

In California, Larry Millete was convicted of first-degree murder in July in the disappearance of his wife Maya (May) Millete — no body, no confession, a case built on surveillance gaps and phone records. His sentencing, first set for Sept. 29, was pushed to Nov. 2, while jury selection began Oct. 5 in Virginia for a strikingly similar fact pattern.

The counterexample is the Mike Williams case in Florida, where the truth did not surface for 17 years and only after someone talked. Time helps prosecutors less than people assume; it mostly helps whoever has the physical evidence, and here that is nobody.

What was worth watching before Oct. 5?

The Sept. 25 pretrial hearing was the last scheduled chance to move anything. Judge Kimberly Irving allowed news cameras but no livestream, and a pool of 300 potential jurors, more than four times the usual number, was planned. Jury selection in a county this size, for a case this covered, can eat a full day or two.

For the wider calendar: the Caleb Flynn trial in Ohio ended Sept. 29 with guilty verdicts and an Oct. 5 sentence of life without parole, the Aliza Sherman prosecution is still stalled in Cleveland, and Tennessee had an execution set for Sept. 30 that was not completed.
