What happened to the Gilgo Beach trial that was supposed to start in 2026?

It never happened. A judge had said the trial would begin in September 2026 "come hell or high water," and for a while that looked real.

Then in early April 2026, Heuermann pleaded guilty instead. The trial date came and went in September with the case already closed.

Which women did he plead guilty to killing?

Seven, by name: Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25; Melissa Barthelemy, 24; Megan Waterman, 22; Amber Costello, 27; Jessica Taylor, 20; Sandra Costilla, 28; and Valerie Mack, 24.

He separately admitted causing the death of Karen Vergata. No charge was filed in her case as part of the deal, which means she is counted in his admission but not in his convictions.

Four of those names — Brainard-Barnes, Barthelemy, Waterman and Costello — are the women long referred to as the Gilgo Four, found within days of each other along Ocean Parkway in December 2010.

What exactly was the sentence?

Consecutive life terms with no possibility of parole. Mazzei imposed them after a long afternoon of victim impact statements from relatives who had waited more than a decade to say anything to his face.

"You are a disgusting, despicable and small man, and you are a coward," the judge told him before pronouncing sentence.

Jasmine Robinson, a cousin of Jessica Taylor, put it more simply: "A million years isn't enough. Nothing will ever make this right."

Where is Rex Heuermann now?

In state prison, not the county jail he lived in for nearly three years. He was moved out of Suffolk County custody the day after sentencing and began intake at Green Haven Correctional Facility in Dutchess County.

Green Haven was a processing stop, not his permanent address. New York's corrections department assigns a long-term facility only after reviewing criminal history, security risk, medical and mental health needs.

The department later confirmed he is housed at Clinton Correctional Facility, a maximum-security prison in Dannemora, according to Patch reports on DOCCS statements dated June 29 and Aug. 12, 2026. DOCCS does not disclose his specific location within the facility or his housing status.

Why did he plead guilty at all?

He gave up a trial and got two things. The plea closed out all eight women at once, so no further prosecution is coming over any of them.

In exchange he agreed to cooperate with the FBI's behavioral analysis unit — the profilers — on other serial killings. 👉 That cooperation term is the only part of this case that is still open.

Whether anything useful comes out of those sessions is not something the public will hear about quickly, if at all.

Who was he before the arrest?

A 62-year-old architect with a Manhattan practice, living in Massapequa Park, a middle-class Long Island suburb about an hour east of the city. He was arrested in July 2023 outside his Midtown office.

He spent the three years before sentencing in a segregated cell in the Suffolk County jail, where, according to reporting at the time, he read grim novels and corresponded with at least one other convicted serial killer.
